2nd Annual Plan My Future Event: Students Explore Career Opportunities

Nearly 800 students are expected to tour a maze of career opportunities at Las Cruces Public Schools’ Plan My Future career exploration fair on Feb. 29 at the LCPS Field of Dreams. The event is organized by the LCPS Career and Technical Education team (CTE) to reach middle and high school students who might be interested in various career paths outside of college.

Plan My Future will be in the west parking lot of the Field of Dreams, 2300 Tashiro Road on Thursday, Feb. 29.  The exploration fair will be open to high school students from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and to middle school students from noon to 2 p.m.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), some of the fastest-growing, well paid careers in 2022 were in the building trades – most of which only require a high school diploma. BLS data also shows that two-thirds of jobs in 2022 were in occupations that do not typically require a college degree.

The success of Plan My Future, according to organizer Kathleen Gardner, a career readiness and work-based learning teacher with LCPS, is directly dependent on the businesses and organizations who lend their time to interact with students and teach them more about post-secondary career paths. Previously, building trades, media outlets, Doña Ana County Fire and Emergency Services, local law enforcement agencies and other vocational industries participated in the event with live demonstrations in electrical work, heavy equipment and other career-related, hands-on opportunities.

Area businesses and industry partners who would like to reserve a space and interact with students can fill out this form or contact Kathleen Gardner, kgardner@lcps.net or by calling or texting (575) 640-3998.
