Centennial Senior Is Heisman High School Scholarship Winner

A Las Cruces Public Schools senior has been named a recipient for the State of New Mexico and Centennial High School winner in the Heisman High School Scholarship Competition Award.

Tyler Gomez, set to graduate from Centennial High School in May, was among 4,000 students from across the nation who applied for the scholarship earlier last fall. Gomez plays wing, defender, and midfield for Centennial’s varsity soccer team. On the pitch since he was a freshman for the Hawks, Gomez says he plans to pursue a degree in business and sports management after graduation.

As a state winner, Gomez receives a $1,000 scholarship and is eligible to win up to $10,000 in additional scholarship opportunities.

The Heisman Memorial Trophy is annually awarded to the most outstanding college football player in the nation. The Heisman High School Scholarship extends the Heisman prestige to our nation’s most esteemed high school seniors by recognizing and rewarding outstanding student athletes.

To apply, students must be graduating with the Class of 2024, have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or better, participate in at least one of the sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee, the Paralympic Games and/or the National Federation of State High School Association and be a leader in the student’s school and community.
